The Licking County Aging Program is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Senior Citizens by contributing to their independence and healthy life-styles. We do not charge a fee for any of our services, but donations are appreciated and we have a suggested amount for each service. The following services are available for seniors age 60 and older (55 and older for the social activities).

We provide professionally trained and supervised homemakers and home health aides who perform personal care such as bathing; hair, skin, mouth and back care; assistance with transfers and use of adaptive equipment; help with range-of-motion exercises; and offering emotional support. The service also provides for upkeep of the home through light housekeeping duties such as: kitchen and bathroom cleaning, changing linens, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, laundry, and errands related to food or medical needs. Handyman services are available through the CHORE staff. Respite care is offered for 24-hour caregivers who need a break in their responsibility to handle personal needs. Client case management is handled by two LPN’s and three RN’s.

We have a meals on wheels program that delivers meals to homebound Seniors throughout the county and we also have 10 congregate meals sites - 5 in Newark and one each in Heath, Buckeye Lake, Pataskala, Johnstown and Utica. Meals are provided at lunch time during weekdays. All meals are low in sodium and diabetic meals are also available. Special diet meals may be prepared if the proper information is provided. Frozen weekend and holiday meals can also be provided. We prepare about 650 meals daily, with 475 being delivered to homes and 175 served at the congregate sites. Meal reservations need to be made by 9:00 a.m.

This department provides a number of services including delivering meals and transporting Seniors to the congregate meal sites. In addition, we transport wheelchair bound Seniors to medical and other necessary appointments. We regularly transport to Columbus, Zanesville, and of course, medical facilities in Licking County.

A variety of activities take place at Zerger Hall including computer, ceramics, art, crafts, tatting, exercise and quilting classes; line dance lessons; and euchre and bridge/hausie clubs. In addition, a number of clubs meet at Zerger Hall: Fly Fishermen, Shawnee Society of Model Railroaders, AARP, County Music Fellowship Organization, NARVRE, Ohio Archaeology Society, Licking County Computer Society, and See More Travel Club. We also periodically offer health screenings for hearing, blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

Upon turning 65, we are confronted with a health-care system that both protects and confuses. If you need help with Medicare billing, finding a drug plan or supplement that meets your needs, or if you just have questions, LCAP can help. The Licking County Aging Program has a fulltime social worker, trained by the Ohio Department of Insurance, to assist in your search for the right answers and benefits. When you call 345-0821 or 1-800-452-0097, ask to speak to the social worker in the Home Services Department.

The Lobby Hobby Shop located in Zerger Hall is a wonderful place to shop for that unique one of a kind gift. Our shop is open to the public from 9:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Monday through Friday. Seniors age 60 and older may sell their crafts on consignment. If you would like to find out more about being a consignor, or if you would like to just stop down to do a little shopping, please keep us in mind.

Sometimes with taking care of family issues, working, and everyone’s busy life style, it is hard to make calls that you know you should make to that older adult. Let our Smilemaker help. Anyone can make a referral to have our Smilemaker give that older person a regular call. You may even refer yourself if you are 60 or older, or permanently disabled. This service provides socialization and keeps an older adult from living in isolation. The calls also serve as a check on the person’s well being. Let our Smilemaker give your loved one a reason to smile.
